Your reception is an important part of the your business; it is where you make your first impression, where you put your visitors/residents at ease and possibly where vistors spend some time waiting.
What could possibly be hazardous about The Reception Area?
First of all, entering the premises:
- Is the floor space clear, no damaged or fraying mats to tip on?
- If it's been wet outside can someone entering slip as soon as they enter the premises?
- Is the pathway clear Obstacles of any sort may cause a bumping or visual obstruction. Housekeeping is very important both from a safety point of view and to give a good impression to future visitors.
Reception itself
- Is the counter clear of clutter, can a client make enquires or payments without knocking something over or onto themselves?
- Is your Health and Safety Law Poster displayed where all clients and staff can see it?
- Are fire procedures and first aid facilities notified here?
The Receptionist
- Has the reception area been risk assessed?
- Has any display screen equipment been assessed and training given?
- Does the receptionist have the correct type of seating for the job?
- Is the workstation comfortable and appropriate for the intended use?
- Are there any manual handling issues, does the receptionist receive deliveries that require transferring to another area in the workplace?
- Does the receptionist know how to manage an emergency, e.g. fire, accident etc?
- Has there been any training on dealing with a confrontational customer?
- Has training been given in stress management?
