Introduction to Laundry

In most care homes washing machines and tumble dryers are used extensively, and in some homes by residents as well as staff.  The machine suppliers or manufacturers should give you information on maintentance and cleaning of the equipment, electrical safety, prevention of fire hazards and turning off water and electrical supplies to the machines in the even of an emergency.  Any maintenance must be carried out by a competent person.

You will also need to look at the following areas for your risk assessments :

  • use of machinery;
  • handling soiled laundry;
  • housekeeping;
  • slips, trips;
  • hygiene
